You never know how people will react with reward mechanisms. We talked earlier about unintended consequences; and one of the things that we do on the Death Star is highlight our top performing Storm Trooper of the Month – you know, the standard Employee of the Month kind of deal.
If you try one of these, make sure you clearly communicate any process or mechanisms behind when awarding someone with it. E.g if you have Trophy that sits on the desk of the current champion, and at the end of the month it moves on… You better make sure that that employee knows that it’s temporary, as they’re likely to attach a lot of pride and emotion to it. And when it disappears they’ll feel suddenly invalidated, and that their value has been stripped away.
Yet, other staff members may not even think twice about it, and feel a sense of pride that this 1 unique trophy has sat on the desk of champions, and that they were worthy to be a part of that tradition.
People interpret things differently by huge varying degrees. Unintended Consequences.
